South Africa’s Cruise Boom: An Exciting Trend for Travelers in 2025
Cruising is rapidly becoming a preferred vacation choice for South Africans, particularly among families and couples, according to Sue Garrett, General Manager of Supply, Pricing, and Marketing at Flight Centre Travel Group South Africa. As the cruise industry gears up for the year ahead, 2025 is set to offer an array of new ships, experiences, and itineraries that promise to enhance the allure of cruising with a blend of luxury, value, and convenience.
Garrett highlights that the all-inclusive nature of cruises plays a significant role in their rising popularity. Local cruise options, especially those departing from Durban and Cape Town with MSC Cruises, are particularly attractive to first-time cruisers and budget-conscious travelers. These itineraries provide an affordable and hassle-free alternative, eliminating the complexities of long-haul flights and travel visas, making it easier for South Africans to embark on their cruising adventures.
This growing trend aligns with broader demographic shifts within the cruising market. In 2024, couples accounted for 65% of international and 62% of domestic cruise passengers, while families represented 28% and 29% respectively. Solo travelers and groups made up smaller proportions, with the average cruise extending over ten days, highlighting South Africans' preference for immersive experiences at sea.
Looking forward to 2025, several emerging trends are anticipated to diversify the appeal of cruising further.
Digital detox cruises are gaining popularity among travelers eager to unplug from technology, while culinary-themed voyages are offering unique dining experiences, including specialty menus and cooking workshops led by celebrity chefs. Additionally, women-only cruises, such as those provided by Uniworld River Cruises, are creating exclusive experiences tailored for female travelers. The concept of “workations” is also reshaping the cruise landscape, allowing remote workers to remain connected while enjoying the beauty of life at sea.
Meanwhile, river cruising continues to attract attention with its intimate and personalized journeys that resonate with seasoned travelers. Garrett encourages all travelers to explore the various options available. “First-time cruisers can begin their journey with affordable local cruises, while seasoned voyagers can anticipate exciting upgrades and longer, multi-continent itineraries,” she noted. Due to security concerns in the Red Sea and Suez Canal regions, major cruise lines are adjusting their routes along the African coast, significantly increasing cruise calls in Cape Town. This year, notable cruise lines such as Cunard Line, Princess Cruises, Costa Cruises, MSC Cruises, AIDA Cruises, and Fred Olsen Cruise Line are offering grand voyages from Cape Town, repositioning ships between the East and West or embarking on World Cruises. As South Africans embrace the growing trend of cruising, the future looks bright for this thriving segment of the travel industry, presenting exciting opportunities for travel agents to cater to this evolving market.
