Enugu Air and XEJet Partnership Takes Off, Transforming SE Nigeria’s Connectivity
Enugu Air, the ambitious new airline backed by the Enugu State Government, is set to launch commercial operations on July 7, 2025. This exciting development marks a significant step towards enhancing air connectivity in southeastern Nigeria and beyond. The airline’s launch is a key element of Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to modernize the region’s transport infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
In a strategic partnership with established Nigerian carrier XEJet Limited, Enugu Air will initially operate flights under XEJet's Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This collaborative approach allows Enugu Air to commence services while it progresses towards securing its own AOC. XEJet, known for its premium business-class services and expanding fleet, will provide operational management, aircraft, and crew for Enugu Air's initial flights.
Enugu Air’s fleet begins with two Embraer E170s, sourced from CIAF Leasing, and has recently added its first Embraer E190, leased from Regional One, Inc. This new acquisition, which arrived in Lagos on June 28, 2025, strengthens the airline’s capacity and underscores its commitment to providing reliable and efficient air travel. The E190 is renowned for its passenger comfort, featuring spacious 2+2 seating, large windows, and a high cabin ceiling. It is also well-suited for regional operations, offering a balance of capacity and range.
The partnership between Enugu Air and XEJet is a crucial element of Enugu State’s broader transport modernization strategy. This initiative includes investments in electric vehicles, CNG buses, and new transport terminals, all aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic activity. The airline’s launch is expected to create new job opportunities in aviation and related sectors, further contributing to the region’s economic development.
Enugu Air’s initial route network will focus on connecting Enugu with Abuja and Lagos, forming a “golden triangle” linking key Nigerian cities. These routes are strategically chosen to cater to both business and leisure travelers, facilitating easier access to southeastern Nigeria and promoting tourism in the region. Future expansion plans include direct flights to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and other important domestic destinations. The airline also has ambitions to extend its reach to West and Central Africa, further solidifying Enugu’s position as a regional aviation hub.
Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) in Enugu will serve as Enugu Air’s main operational hub. The airport has recently undergone runway repairs and is slated for a major concession and upgrade. These improvements will include new international and cargo terminals, enhanced maintenance facilities, and a runway extension. These infrastructural developments are essential for supporting the growth of air traffic in the region and accommodating Enugu Air’s expansion plans.
The Nigerian domestic aviation market is currently experiencing a period of transformation, with new entrants like Enugu Air and Binani Air increasing competition and driving improvements in connectivity. While the market saw a slight dip in passenger numbers in 2024, projections for 2025 and beyond are optimistic, with revenue expected to grow significantly. The entry of new airlines is also impacting fare structures, leading to lower base fares on competitive routes and increased passenger volumes.
Despite these positive trends, the Nigerian aviation sector still faces challenges, including foreign exchange shortages, high maintenance costs, and fluctuating fuel prices. These factors can impact operational efficiency and limit service frequency, particularly on less-traveled routes. However, the government is actively working on reforms to address these issues, including the removal of Nigeria from the Cape Town Convention aircraft leasing risk list, which will facilitate access to more affordable aircraft financing for local airlines.
Enugu Air’s arrival is expected to significantly improve connectivity in southeastern Nigeria, a region that has historically been underserved by air travel. By offering direct flights to major cities and expanding its network to other regional destinations, Enugu Air will make it easier for people to travel for business, leisure, and personal reasons. This increased accessibility will have a positive impact on tourism, trade, and overall economic activity in the region.
The airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet with fuel-efficient aircraft like the Embraer E190 also aligns with global trends towards sustainable aviation. The E190’s lower operating costs and reduced emissions contribute to a more environmentally responsible approach to air travel. This focus on sustainability is important for the long-term viability of the aviation industry and reflects Enugu Air’s commitment to responsible growth.
Looking ahead, Enugu Air’s partnership with XEJet and its strategic focus on regional connectivity position it for success in the evolving Nigerian aviation market. As the airline expands its fleet and route network, it is poised to play a key role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing travel options for people in southeastern Nigeria and beyond. The airline’s launch is a testament to the Enugu State Government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and creating a more connected and prosperous future for the region.
