Airlink Honoured with 2025 Ubuntu Economic Diplomacy Award
Airlink, a leading regional airline, has been awarded the 2025 Ubuntu Economic
Diplomacy Award by South Africa’s Department of
International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). The accolade
celebrates Airlink’s contributions to advancing South Africa’s socio-economic objectives,
including job
creation, trade facilitation, and attracting investment, while
enhancing the country’s reputation as an ideal business destination.
The award was presented during a ceremony in Cape
Town, hosted by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.
Accepting the award, Airlink’s CEO and Managing Director, Rodger Foster,
highlighted the airline’s commitment to Ubuntu’s principles of interdependence and
interconnectivity. “Connecting people with people and people
with places is Airlink’s mission,” Foster said. “The positive impact of our
services on the people, communities, markets, and economies we serve confirms
our role as a catalyst for socio-economic upliftment.”
Over the past four years, Airlink has demonstrated
impressive growth, increasing its flights by 31%, doubling its seat
capacity, and boosting passenger numbers by more than 200%. The airline has
expanded its route
network to 47 destinations across 16 African countries
and St
Helena Island, establishing itself as a critical player in
regional connectivity. Additionally, Airlink has forged 40 active commercial
partnerships with major global airlines, enabling inter-continental
connections that support trade, travel, tourism, and economic
growth.
Airlink’s achievements are especially significant
given Africa’s untapped potential in air travel. As Foster pointed out, Africa hosts 18% of the
global population but accounts for less than 2% of global air travel.
He emphasized the need to bridge this gap by supporting economic growth and job
creation through reliable and accessible air services. “Our ability to live by
the principles of Ubuntu—providing safe, reliable, and economically stimulating
air services—relies on all actors in the value chain. After all, Ubuntu means
‘I am because we are,’ underscoring interdependence and connection,” Foster
added.
The Ubuntu Economic Diplomacy Award reflects
Airlink’s role in fostering regional integration and development, showcasing how air
connectivity can drive socio-economic progress across Africa. By enhancing
access to markets, promoting tourism, and enabling trade, Airlink continues to
position itself as a key enabler of economic transformation on the continent.
This recognition also underscores the importance of
aviation in achieving broader African development goals. As Airlink continues
to expand its network and strengthen partnerships, it exemplifies the potential
of African airlines to play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s future.
For African travel agents, Airlink’s growth offers enhanced opportunities for business travel,
tourism,
and regional connectivity, reaffirming its status as a trusted partner in
Africa’s aviation landscape.
