Ibom Air, a rising star in Nigeria’s aviation scene, is charting a unique course for growth, prioritizing service reliability over rapid expansion. At a recent travel agent forum in Lagos, CEO George Uriesi outlined the airline’s strategic vision, emphasizing a commitment to consistent service and smart partnerships as key drivers of success.

Uriesi stressed Ibom Air’s deliberate, measured approach to network expansion. While other airlines with comparable fleet sizes might serve twice as many destinations, Ibom Air, currently operating nine aircraft across seven routes, is focused on consolidating its existing network and ensuring top-notch service reliability before venturing into new territories. This strategy directly addresses the challenges of maintaining on-time performance in Nigeria’s dynamic operating environment, where weather and technical issues can disrupt schedules. Uriesi highlighted the airline’s impressive 97% on-time performance for morning flights, its most critical operations.

A cornerstone of Ibom Air’s growth strategy is its state-of-the-art terminal in Uyo, described by Uriesi as “the best in the country.” This new facility is purpose-built to support seamless domestic-to-international and international-to-domestic connections, positioning Ibom Air as a key player in regional connectivity. The terminal’s advanced features, including automated check-in kiosks, biometric security screening, and premium lounges, are designed to enhance the passenger experience and set a new standard for air travel in Nigeria.

Ibom Air’s expansion plans include new routes to underserved markets in Central and West Africa, such as Malabo, Libreville, and São Tomé. These strategic additions not only connect less-accessible destinations but also contribute to Nigeria’s emergence as a regional transit hub. Uriesi expressed confidence that the combination of the new Uyo terminal and Ibom Air’s commitment to service quality will generate positive word-of-mouth marketing, stimulating demand and driving growth.

Recognizing the vital role of travel agents in the airline’s success, Uriesi emphasized the importance of collaboration and mutual benefit. In just six months, travel agent contributions have grown to represent 6% of Ibom Air’s revenue, a figure projected to reach 12% by year-end and potentially 50% in the long term. With Ibom Air’s projected 2025 revenue exceeding ₦150 billion, this translates to substantial earning potential for travel agents, ranging from ₦9 billion at a 6% share to ₦18 billion at a 12% share. Further projections indicate that if travel agent contributions reach 50%, their revenue share could climb to an impressive ₦75 billion.
