For 2025, Time Out introduced an exciting new dimension by spotlighting the voices of Generation Z. By filtering the same extensive data to focus exclusively on residents under 30, the magazine crafted the World’s Best Cities for Gen Z list. This fresh ranking highlights destinations where young people not only live but thrive, emphasizing factors like affordability, inclusivity, creativity, and overall quality of life.
South Africa’s Cape Town emerged as a standout performer, securing the third spot globally in this youth-focused ranking. The city’s unique combination of stunning natural landscapes, a vibrant cultural scene, and accessible nightlife earned it high praise from young residents. According to Time Out’s survey, 82% of Cape Town’s Gen Z population report happiness living in the city, 71% call it beautiful, 76% find nights out affordable, and 62% describe it as an exciting place to live.
With its iconic Table Mountain backdrop, pristine beaches, and flourishing food and arts culture, Cape Town has become a magnet for young creatives, entrepreneurs, and adventure seekers. This dynamic environment resonates strongly with Gen Z’s desire for authentic experiences and vibrant social scenes.
Leading the 2025 Gen Z rankings is Bangkok, Thailand, celebrated for its affordability (71%), friendliness, and bustling street life. An impressive 84% of young residents express happiness living there, reflecting the city’s appeal as a lively and accessible urban hub. Following closely is Melbourne, Australia, which earned its second-place position thanks to its diversity (77% describe it as inclusive), world-class arts and culture (96% praise it), and exceptional quality of life (91%).
