MMA2 Delivers Record Festive-Season Efficiency, Eyes Major Upgrades for 2026
Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, closed out the year with a standout performance, demonstrating remarkable operational resilience during one of the busiest travel periods on Nigeria’s aviation calendar. Despite the annual surge in passenger traffic that defines the festive season, MMA2 managed to keep flights moving smoothly and passengers comfortable, thanks to a blend of flexible planning, close coordination with airlines and ground handlers, and a commitment to service excellence.
Throughout the high-pressure end-of-year window, MMA2 extended its operational hours multiple times, remaining open well beyond scheduled shutdown periods to accommodate late-night and delayed flights. These adjustments were seamlessly integrated with ongoing maintenance work, ensuring that safety standards, infrastructure integrity, and service delivery were never compromised, even as traffic volumes soared. Additional operational support, deployed in collaboration with ground handlers, helped ease passenger movement, speed up baggage processing, and limit disruptions to airline schedules—a testament to the terminal’s ability to adapt under pressure.
Reflecting on the season, Remi Jibodu, Head of Aeronautics and Cargo Services and Acting Chief Operating Officer, noted that lessons learned from the festive rush would inform significant efficiency upgrades in the coming year. Among the most anticipated changes is the planned introduction of a structured slot system in 2026. This initiative aims to better balance demand with terminal capacity, reduce congestion during peak hours, and improve on-time performance, while also enabling ground handling companies to plan and deploy resources more effectively. The move aligns with global best practices in apron and airside management and is part of a broader operational optimisation strategy designed to keep MMA2 at the forefront of airport terminal management in West Africa.
Beyond flight operations, MMA2 also recorded notable gains in its non-aeronautical services, further enhancing the overall passenger experience. Kola Bamigboye, Head of Space and Premises Management and Acting Chief Operating Officer, highlighted a year marked by innovation across customer-facing services, from retail and concession management to improved passenger amenities. These enhancements have positioned the terminal to sustain and build on its momentum in 2026, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable and forward-thinking aviation hub.
Security and passenger support systems were also in the spotlight during the festive period. Enhanced CCTV surveillance proved effective in monitoring terminal activities and enabled the recovery and return of several lost items, including travel documents and personal belongings, drawing commendations from grateful passengers. An active customer experience email channel ensured prompt response and resolution of complaints, boosting passenger confidence and satisfaction at a time of intense activity.
As traffic levels stabilise in the new year, MMA2 is focused on consolidating these gains while deepening collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, regulators, and other stakeholders across the aviation value chain. With continuous improvement, efficiency, and customer satisfaction at the core of its strategy, the terminal is positioning itself for a strong operational year in 2026. This approach reaffirms MMA2’s status as a leading example of private-sector airport terminal management in Nigeria and a model for others in the region seeking to raise the bar in service delivery and operational excellence.
