South African National Parks to Upgrade Water Infrastructure at Bitterpan Wilderness Camp in Kgalaga South African National Parks to Upgrade Water Infrastructure at Bitterpan Wilderness Camp in Kgalaga

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the commencement of vital construction work to enhance water capacity at the Bitterpan Wilderness Camp, located within the iconic Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Scheduled to begin in early February 2026, this project represents a key investment in strengthening essential infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability and reliability at one of the park’s most remote wilderness camps.

Starting from around February 4, 2026, visitors travelling to or through the Bitterpan area can expect to observe some construction-related activity. This will include construction vehicles operating along the Moravet Road and general site preparation near the camp. Despite the works, SANParks has reassured that visitor safety and the wilderness experience will remain priorities, with disruptions anticipated to be minimal throughout the approximately four-week project duration.

Bitterpan Wilderness Camp is renowned for its exclusivity and spectacular location, set on stilts above the striking red dunes of the Kalahari Desert. The camp overlooks a waterhole, offering guests unique wildlife viewing opportunities in a tranquil and remote setting. It is part of a one-way 4x4 wilderness route that connects the Nossob Rest Camp with Mata-Mata Rest Camp and the Kalahari Tented Camp, making it a coveted destination for adventurous travellers seeking an authentic wilderness experience.

Access to Bitterpan requires careful planning due to its isolation and strict access regulations. The route is one-way only, commencing at Nossob Rest Camp, and only 4x4 vehicles are permitted—heavy 4x4s are not allowed. The drive from Nossob to Bitterpan takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the journey onwards to Mata-Mata Rest Camp is about 3 hours. Visitors are advised to overnight at Nossob Rest Camp before proceeding to Bitterpan Wilderness Camp, ensuring proper acclimatisation and preparation for the remote terrain.

This infrastructure upgrade aligns with SANParks’ broader commitment to enhancing the resilience and sustainability of its wilderness camps, especially those in remote locations. Reliable water supply is critical not only for guest comfort but also for maintaining the delicate ecosystem that supports wildlife in the Kgalagadi. By investing in such projects, SANParks is reinforcing its role in preserving South Africa’s natural heritage while facilitating unforgettable travel experiences.

For African tourism professionals and operators specialising in adventure and eco-tourism, the improvements at Bitterpan Wilderness Camp underscore the ongoing development of premium wilderness offerings in the region. As demand for exclusive, off-the-beaten-path experiences grows, infrastructure enhancements like these will be instrumental in supporting both conservation and high-quality travel services.

With the planned upgrades, Bitterpan Wilderness Camp is set to continue captivating discerning travellers with its unique blend of rugged beauty and exceptional wildlife encounters, firmly positioning the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park as a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
