South Africa Records Highest-Ever Tourist Arrivals as Government Strengthens Sector Support
South Africa’s tourism sector is celebrating a historic milestone, with the country welcoming an unprecedented 10.48 million international visitors last year. This represents a remarkable 17.6% increase compared to 2024 and surpasses pre-COVID-19 levels, marking the highest number of arrivals on record. President Cyril Ramaphosa described this achievement as a “vote of confidence” in South Africa’s appeal as a safe, reliable, and value-for-money destination.
In his weekly address to the nation, the President emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering further growth in the tourism industry. He highlighted the importance of strengthening the regulatory and policy environment while deepening collaboration with private sector stakeholders, labor, and communities. These efforts aim to unlock the full potential of a sector that already contributes nearly 9% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Key initiatives under the government’s Tourism Growth Partnership Plan, endorsed last year, are driving this momentum. Among these is the expansion of the Electronic Travel Authorisation system, which was successfully piloted during the G20 Summit and is now being rolled out in key tourism markets. This system simplifies visa processes, making South Africa more accessible to international travelers.
Additionally, the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme, launched last year, is streamlining visa applications for group travelers. This initiative has already gained traction in key markets such as India and China, where tourists often prefer structured, group-based travel experiences. These measures are expected to further enhance South Africa’s competitiveness as a global tourism destination.
Improving connectivity is another priority. The country has seen an increase in direct flight routes from major markets, including Australia and France, making it easier for international visitors to access South Africa’s diverse attractions. To ensure the safety of tourists, additional tourism monitors have been deployed, and a private sector-led crime call center has been established.
Infrastructure development is also playing a crucial role in boosting the sector. At the inaugural Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit held last year, eight projects worth R1 billion were launched, signaling renewed investor confidence. These projects aim to enhance the visitor experience while supporting local economies and job creation.
South Africa’s strategic destination marketing efforts continue to focus on niche markets such as halal and green tourism, attracting a more diverse range of visitors. The government is also investing in skills development, offering fully funded Mandarin language training for registered tourism guides to better cater to the growing Chinese market.
President Ramaphosa called on all South Africans to embrace the burgeoning tourism industry, emphasizing that every citizen has a role to play as a tourism ambassador. He noted that foreign visitors not only contribute to the country’s foreign earnings but also support local businesses, bolster regional economies, and create jobs. Communities, in particular, have the potential to transform themselves into unique tourist attractions, showcasing South Africa’s rich natural beauty, history, and culture.
“Working together as government, industry, communities, and civil society, we can realize even greater value from this jewel in our nation’s crown,” the President concluded. With a clear vision and collaborative efforts, South Africa’s tourism sector is poised for even greater achievements, offering immense opportunities for the African travel industry to tap into this growing success story.
