ATTA Invites Entries for 2026 Action Awards Honouring Regenerative Tourism Excellence ATTA Invites Entries for 2026 Action Awards Honouring Regenerative Tourism Excellence

The African Travel and Tourism Association has officially launched the call for submissions to its prestigious 2026 ATTA for Action Awards, inviting tourism businesses across the continent to showcase their most impactful sustainability and community-focused initiatives. Now entering their third year, these awards have matured from a platform celebrating noble intentions into an authoritative industry standard for measuring genuine, results-driven work in responsible travel.

Organisations interested in participating must submit their entries before 17 April 2026, with winners to be announced at a ceremony taking place on 22 June 2026 during Experience Africa in London. Notably, there is no cost associated with entering, making the awards accessible to operations of all sizes. Each applicant may submit entries in up to two categories, allowing businesses to highlight multiple areas of achievement.

The programme maintains its ten established award categories covering the full breadth of regenerative travel practices. These encompass marine conservation efforts, climate innovation projects, community empowerment programmes, and ethical storytelling approaches, among others. The decision to retain consistent categories from previous years reflects a deliberate strategy by the association to create meaningful benchmarks that allow the industry to track genuine progress over time.

ATTA Group Events Chief Executive Chris Mears explained that maintaining category consistency enables the organisation to challenge participants to demonstrate real advancement. The expectation has shifted from simply presenting promising concepts to proving how those ideas have evolved into functioning business models that deliver tangible outcomes. Whether an initiative improves livelihoods, contributes to wildlife protection, or transforms supply chain practices, judges will be looking for evidence of actual change rather than impressive documentation.

Mears encouraged submissions from the entire spectrum of African tourism operators, from boutique eco-lodges to large-scale tour companies. The underlying philosophy is that effective blueprints for responsible tourism deserve visibility so that the broader industry can learn from and replicate successful approaches.

Honorary President Nigel Vere-Nicoll emphasised that the awards serve a critical function in distinguishing organisations that are genuinely committed to positive impact from those merely adopting sustainability language for marketing purposes. As the gap between promotional messaging and operational reality continues to widen across global tourism, these awards provide a verification mechanism for authentic leadership.

Vere-Nicoll expressed confidence that Africa is positioning itself as a global frontrunner in regenerative tourism, and the awards programme validates that claim by rigorously examining the evidence behind it. The judging process employs a thorough double-check scoring system conducted by a carefully selected panel combining experienced industry veterans with younger professionals bringing fresh perspectives and high expectations for meaningful change.

Beyond the recognition value, entering the awards offers participating organisations strategic advantages in an evolving marketplace. International buyers increasingly seek purpose-driven partners when developing travel programmes, and award recognition positions companies favourably in these discussions. For teams working diligently on sustainability initiatives, the awards provide an opportunity to have their efforts acknowledged on a prominent global platform.

For African travel professionals, the programme represents both an opportunity and a challenge. Those with genuine stories of impact should consider how their work might contribute to building the continent's reputation as a leader in tourism that benefits people and planet alike. As industry expectations evolve and travellers demand greater accountability, the businesses establishing credible track records today will likely find themselves best positioned for the opportunities emerging in the years ahead.
