Marriott Bonvoy, the internationally acclaimed travel programme operated by Marriott International, and Ethiopian Airlines, the continent's largest carrier, have announced a partnership that allows members to earn and exchange points and miles across both hotel stays and flights.

The agreement, which takes effect immediately, creates a direct link between Marriott Bonvoy and ShebaMiles, the loyalty programme operated by Ethiopian Airlines. Members enrolled in both schemes can now convert ShebaMiles into Marriott Bonvoy points, unlocking access to hotel bookings, room upgrades, and a wide range of travel benefits. Equally, Marriott Bonvoy members can transfer their points into ShebaMiles, enabling them to book flights through Ethiopian Airlines and its extensive partner network.

For African travel professionals, this development carries significant implications. The partnership connects Ethiopian Airlines' route network of more than 145 destinations with Marriott Bonvoy's global portfolio, which spans over 30 hotel brands and approximately 10,000 properties worldwide. This combination offers clients unprecedented flexibility when planning journeys that involve both air travel and accommodation.

Andrew Watson, Chief Commercial Officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, highlighted the strategic importance of the continent in the company's growth plans. He noted that Africa represents one of the fastest-growing regions for travel globally and described the partnership as a reflection of Marriott's commitment to delivering rewarding experiences for its members. The collaboration, he explained, gives travellers the freedom to enjoy loyalty benefits in ways that suit their individual preferences, whether that means earning miles during hotel stays or using accumulated points to secure flights.

From the airline's perspective, Rahel Assefa, Ethiopian Airlines Group Vice President of Marketing, emphasised the value of expanding service offerings for ShebaMiles members. She described the partnership as part of a broader vision to enhance the travel experience while building strategic relationships with stakeholders who share a commitment to exceeding customer expectations. Access to Marriott Bonvoy's worldwide hotel network, she noted, creates new opportunities for members to earn and redeem miles across multiple touchpoints and destinations both within Africa and internationally.

The practical details of the programme offer attractive conversion rates for participants. ShebaMiles members can convert their miles to Marriott Bonvoy points at a ratio of two to one. Marriott Bonvoy members transferring points in the opposite direction do so at a three-to-one rate, with an additional bonus of 5,000 ShebaMiles awarded for every 60,000 points transferred in a single transaction. When staying at participating Marriott properties, members can choose to earn up to two miles per US dollar spent or continue accumulating Marriott Bonvoy points as usual.

Enrolment in both programmes is the only requirement to access these benefits. No account linking is necessary, simplifying the process for travellers who wish to take immediate advantage of the new arrangement.

Ethiopian Airlines' membership in Star Alliance, the world's largest airline network, further extends the value of this partnership. ShebaMiles members and Marriott Bonvoy members who convert their points gain access to flight redemptions and cabin upgrades across 25 Star Alliance partner airlines serving more than 1,150 destinations globally. This reach includes frequent connections from Addis Ababa to major cities such as Mumbai, Paris, London, Washington and Beijing.
