Emirates Doubles A350 Premium Economy Service to Colombo, Boosting African Connectivity Options
In a strategic move that signals continued confidence in the South Asian market, Emirates will launch a second daily Airbus A350 service between Dubai and Colombo from 8 August 2026. This aircraft upgrade replaces the Boeing 777 that has been operating flight EK648/EK649, effectively doubling the number of daily services featuring the airline's popular Premium Economy cabin on the route. For African travel professionals building itineraries to Sri Lanka, this development opens up more premium seating inventory and greater flexibility when routing clients through the Dubai hub.
The Gulf carrier currently operates four daily services between Dubai International Airport and Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, using a mix of Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft. With this latest enhancement, two of those daily rotations will now offer the next-generation A350 experience, giving passengers from across sub-Saharan Africa additional access to a superior cabin product when connecting via Dubai to one of Asia's most alluring island destinations.
Under the new schedule, flight EK648 will depart Dubai daily at 16:10hrs, arriving in Colombo at 22:10hrs local time. The return service, EK649, leaves Colombo at 02:55hrs and touches down in Dubai at 05:50hrs. This timing complements the existing A350-operated EK654/655 rotation, giving customers a wider choice of departure windows to align with onward connections. Two additional daily services, EK650/651 and EK652/653, will continue to be operated by the Boeing 777, while a fifth daily service links Colombo to Dubai via Male in the Maldives.
This expansion builds on the successful debut of the A350 on the Colombo route in March 2025, when Emirates first introduced its Premium Economy experience to Sri Lanka. The reception from travellers has clearly encouraged the airline to press ahead with a broader deployment of its newest widebody aircraft on the sector. For African travel consultants, this is a meaningful development. Sri Lanka has been steadily rising as a preferred long-haul leisure destination for affluent African travellers, offering wildlife safaris, tea-country escapes, pristine beaches, and cultural heritage all within a compact geography.
The Airbus A350 itself represents a significant upgrade in passenger comfort. Quieter cabins, higher humidity levels, larger windows, and improved lighting systems help reduce jet lag on long-haul journeys, an important selling point for African clients travelling to Asia. The Premium Economy cabin sits comfortably between Business and Economy, offering wider seats, additional legroom, enhanced meal service, and a dedicated cabin ambience at a price point that is attractive to corporate travellers, honeymooners, and family holidaymakers who want extra comfort without stretching to full business-class fares.
For agents in Nairobi, Lagos, Johannesburg, Accra, Dar es Salaam, and Cape Town, the timing could not be better. Emirates' extensive African network feeds seamlessly into Dubai, from where connections to Colombo can now more easily be secured on Premium Economy cabins. This is especially relevant as the African outbound travel market continues to mature, with a growing middle class seeking experiences that combine value, comfort, and novelty.
Looking ahead, this move points to a broader trend that African trade professionals should watch closely. Premium Economy is fast becoming the fastest-growing cabin category worldwide, and airlines that invest early in this segment stand to capture significant loyalty from emerging traveller demographics. As Emirates continues to roll out its A350 fleet across its global network, African agents can expect further route enhancements that will reshape how clients travel between the continent and Asian leisure hotspots in the years to come.
