Discover Airlines Boosts Munich-Windhoek Service to Five Weekly Flights From April 2027
Namibia's international connectivity is set for a significant upgrade, with Discover Airlines announcing a major expansion of its long-haul operations from Munich Airport to Windhoek. Starting April 2027, the leisure carrier will operate five year-round weekly flights between the Bavarian capital and Hosea Kutako International Airport, adding two extra frequencies to the current thrice-weekly schedule and responding to sustained strong demand for one of Southern Africa's most captivating destinations.
For African travel professionals, particularly those working across Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and the wider Southern African region, this development is highly encouraging. Windhoek serves as the natural gateway to Namibia's iconic landscapes, from the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and the wildlife spectacle of Etosha National Park to the dramatic Skeleton Coast and cultural richness of Damaraland. Expanded airlift from Europe means more inbound leisure travellers, greater flexibility for tour operators building multi-country itineraries and stronger opportunities for cross-border tourism partnerships across the region.
Windhoek has been part of Discover Airlines' Munich schedule since spring 2025, initially operating three times a week. The addition of two further frequencies from April 2027 reflects the strength of continued demand and the destination's growing appeal among European travellers. Together with the airline's daily service from Frankfurt, Discover Airlines will operate a total of 12 weekly flights to Windhoek from Germany from the summer of 2027, marking the most extensive schedule the carrier has ever deployed on this route.
The offer is further reinforced by Edelweiss, sister airline within the Lufthansa Group, which has added nonstop seasonal service from Zurich to Windhoek during the summer months. Taken together, the Lufthansa Group is now operating more nonstop flights to Windhoek than ever before, cementing Namibia's position as a priority destination within its long-haul leisure portfolio and reinforcing Europe's growing appetite for African adventure and safari experiences.
From Frankfurt, services will continue to operate daily, while the enhanced Munich schedule will run every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from next summer. This broad weekly coverage gives European travellers, tour operators and inbound Namibian partners far greater flexibility in shaping itineraries, especially for high-value segments such as safari holidays, self-drive adventures, luxury lodges and honeymoon travel.
Speaking about the expansion, Marco Götz, Chief Commercial Officer of Discover Airlines, said Windhoek has always been one of the most popular destinations in the airline's network, with consistently strong booking numbers confirming this year after year. He noted that the growth of the Munich offering will provide guests with even greater flexibility when planning their trip, reflecting the carrier's confidence in Namibia as a long-term strategic destination.
Windhoek was among the first destinations introduced when Discover Airlines launched in August 2021. Since then, the carrier has steadily grown its Namibia service, adding frequencies over the years and reinforcing its commitment to the market. The consistent expansion signals that European demand for Namibian tourism experiences has evolved into a stable, year-round trend rather than a seasonal spike, offering considerable reassurance to hoteliers, safari operators and DMCs across the country.
Flight times have been carefully designed to maximise time on the ground for arriving travellers. Flights depart Munich at 9:40 p.m. and arrive in Windhoek at 7:35 a.m. the following morning, after a flight time of approximately 10 hours. Return flights depart Windhoek at 8:35 p.m., with scheduled arrival in Munich at 6:30 a.m. the next morning, all times local. Overnight scheduling remains particularly attractive for leisure travellers, allowing them to hit the ground running upon arrival in Namibia and begin their safari or self-drive journey without delay.
Operations will be handled by Airbus A330-300 aircraft, which will be progressively retrofitted with the new "Ocean Blue" cabin interior starting in 2027. The refreshed cabin promises an improved in-flight experience, with modern design touches and updated comfort features aligned with contemporary long-haul expectations. Additional flights are already bookable through discover-airlines.com and lufthansa.com, as well as through German tour operators and travel agencies.
For sub-Saharan Africa's travel trade, the message is highly positive. Enhanced European connectivity to Windhoek strengthens Namibia's role as a destination anchor for the region and creates fresh opportunities for combined itineraries linking Namibia with Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Botswana's Okavango Delta and beyond. As Discover Airlines and its Lufthansa Group partners double down on Southern Africa, agents, tour operators and destination marketers should prepare for a wave of new commercial opportunities, driven by rising European interest, expanding capacity and Namibia's steady rise as one of the continent's most compelling long-haul stars.
