Africa's travel trade has a fresh climate signal to factor into itineraries for the coming high season. The consensus forecast from the Thirty-Third Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-33) points to a generally drier-than-normal start to the 2026/27 rainy season across much of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, followed by below-normal rainfall across large parts of central and southern Southern Africa in early 2027. For consultants building safari, self-drive and outdoor experiences between October 2026 and March 2027, this outlook offers valuable planning intelligence.

It is important to place the forecast in context. Seasonal outlooks describe the likelihood of rainfall patterns spread over several months rather than day-to-day weather. A below-normal seasonal outlook can still include periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms and localised flooding, particularly during summer months when convective activity is common inland. What it does provide, however, is an early indication of the broader conditions travellers may encounter across landscapes, water sources and wildlife hotspots.

Looking at October to December 2026, below-normal rainfall is favoured across the bulk of the SADC region. This is likely to be especially significant for traditionally dry destinations such as Namibia, Botswana and parts of South Africa, where the first summer rains shape landscapes, dam levels and animal movements around waterholes. Further north, the picture is more favourable, with normal to above-normal rainfall expected across much of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, northwestern Angola, northern Zambia, central Malawi, northern Mozambique, the southern fringes of Tanzania and the Comoros. Above-normal rainfall is particularly favoured over eastern DRC, most of Tanzania, extreme northern Malawi and Zambia and the Seychelles. Meanwhile, the southwestern coastal belt of South Africa, southwestern Madagascar and Mauritius look set for normal to below-normal rainfall.

Moving into January to March 2027, the drier trend is expected to persist across the heart of Southern Africa's summer. Below-normal rainfall is anticipated across much of the central and southern SADC region, including large parts of Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and parts of South Africa. Southern Mozambique, northern South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho and Madagascar are also likely to see normal to below-normal rainfall. Northern parts of the region again buck the trend, with wetter conditions favoured across the DRC, northern Zambia, northern Malawi, northern Mozambique, parts of Tanzania and the Seychelles. Madagascar is expected to show contrasting patterns between its northern and southeastern regions, while Mauritius is set for normal to above-normal rainfall.

Adding to the picture, above-normal temperatures are expected across most of the SADC region between October 2026 and January 2027. That combination of heat and reduced rainfall matters for travel planning. Midday game drives, hiking excursions and city sightseeing may prove more physically demanding for clients, while prolonged dry conditions can influence water levels, vegetation cover and wildlife distribution across national parks and private reserves. Central and northeastern parts of the region are the main exception, where cooler-than-normal temperatures are forecast.

For sub-Saharan Africa's travel trade, the practical implications are significant. Safari specialists sending clients into Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, South Luangwa, Mana Pools and Kruger should prepare travellers for potentially outstanding dry-season game viewing around remaining waterholes, while advising on sun protection, hydration and lighter, breathable clothing. Self-drive operators may need to plan more carefully around water availability and road conditions in remote areas, while lodges and camps could face operational pressures on their own water resources. For destinations further north, from Tanzania's parks to Malawi's lakeshore and the Indian Ocean islands, wetter conditions may shape wildlife movements and require extra flexibility in scheduling outdoor activities.

As the season approaches, agents would do well to combine this regional outlook with shorter-term forecasts and destination-specific updates closer to travel dates. Rainfall varies considerably between regions, and even within a country conditions can shift markedly over short distances. Being able to advise clients on realistic expectations, packing choices and itinerary tweaks will set thoughtful consultants apart in a season where Southern Africa's landscapes may look drier, warmer and, in many ways, more dramatic than usual.
