Cape Verde Doubles Island Air Capacity as CVsky Adds Two New ATR 72-600 Turboprops
Island connectivity in the Atlantic is about to improve significantly. CVsky, the domestic carrier serving Cape Verde's archipelago, is taking delivery of two additional ATR 72-600 turboprops, a move that will lift its operating fleet to four aircraft. The first of the two was formally handed over on 7 October 2026, leased from Avation PLC, and is scheduled to reach Cape Verde by the end of October after roughly ten working days of repainting in France in the airline's own livery.
For the African travel trade, the significance of this expansion lies less in the number of aircraft than in what it makes possible. Cape Verde is made up of ten islands, and each one offers a different proposition to the visitor. Sal and Boa Vista have long carried the reputation for beach resorts and water sports. Santiago holds the political and cultural weight of the nation. São Vicente is the creative heart, while Santo Antão and Fogo appeal to hikers, volcano enthusiasts and travellers looking for landscapes rather than loungers. Until now, moving between these islands has often been the weakest part of an otherwise strong holiday product.
Reliable internal flights change the shape of the itinerary. A tour operator who can confidently sell a multi-island programme is selling more nights, more transfers, more excursions and a higher overall value per booking. Where agents previously hesitated to combine islands because of uncertain schedules or the risk of a missed international connection on the return leg, four aircraft provide the depth needed to absorb delays and maintain frequency. That reliability is the commodity being purchased here, far more than seat numbers alone.
The choice of equipment also makes commercial sense. The ATR 72-600 is the leading aircraft in the regional turboprop market and can be configured for up to 78 passengers, which suits short island hops where runway lengths and demand patterns rule out larger jets. Operators of the type elsewhere point to considerably lower fuel burn and reduced carbon output compared with regional jets flying similar sectors For a small island state that depends heavily on imported fuel, these operating economics matter directly to the fares eventually offered to the market.
CVsky itself is a relatively young operation, having received its first ATR 72-600 and the operating certificates issued by the national Civil Aviation Agency to begin domestic inter-island services. Reaching a four-aircraft fleet within a short period signals that the airline and the authorities see consistent domestic connectivity as a strategic national asset rather than a secondary service. The financing structure reflects that view as well, with state support underpinning the leasing arrangements behind the newest additions>
There is a practical point for agencies on the mainland. Cape Verde has been building its profile as a destination for travellers from across the continent, not only from Europe, and smoother internal movement strengthens that pitch considerably. Clients from West and Central Africa in particular may find the archipelago an attractive short-haul option for leisure, incentive groups and small conferences, provided the internal legs can be guaranteed at the time of booking. Agents should begin familiarising themselves with island pairings, typical flight durations and the seasonal patterns that affect demand, because these details determine whether a multi-island package feels effortless or stressful to the customer.
The broader trend is worth noting. Across Africa, small turboprop fleets are quietly doing the work that headline-grabbing long-haul announcements cannot. They open secondary destinations, spread tourism revenue beyond one or two saturated resorts, and give the trade something genuinely new to sell. Cape Verde's expansion is a compact example of how modest aircraft investment can unlock disproportionate commercial value, and it is a model other island and regional markets on the continent will be watching closely over the coming seasons.
